Taxation of an individual on profit from shares

Question:
Hello!

I am interested in how the profits from shares of individuals are taxed.

If in 2022 I bought two shares - one of Google and one of Facebook, both shares are worth $100 each. Which means I have invested $200 in 2022. Two years pass, it's 2024. and I decide to sell both shares, but the cost of the shares has changed. Facebook's has become 200$ and Google's has pandaled and is now 0$. When I put them together, I get $200, which is exactly what I bought it for in the beginning, but in total.

If in 2024 not all shares are sold, but only a part of them - 0.5 of the Facebook share worth $200 and at the end of 2024 I have 1 share of Google, 0.5 of Facebook and a balance of $200.
In this situation, how is this $200 taxed or not taxed, because the total previous investment is $200?
Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Hello,
In the example you gave the following happens:
1. In 2023, you have an obligation to declare that as of 12/31/2022 you own 1 share each in Google and Facebook with a total value of 200 dollars. You don't owe tax.
2. In 2024, you have an obligation to declare that as of 31.12.2023 you own 1 share each in Google and Facebook with a total value of 200 dollars. You don't owe tax
3. In 2025 you have an obligation to declare that in 2024 you have sold your shares. Profit is viewed in aggregate - i.e. since the shares purchased were worth $200 in total and you then sold them for a total of $200, you owe no tax (abstracting from any exchange rate differences).
Income reporting on the partial sale is identical.
If you have purchased $100.00 worth of Facebook stock. You sell 0.5 of the share for $200. For this 0.5 share, you actually spent $50 (a whole share is worth $100, half a share is worth half - $50). I.e. You made a profit of $150 on this sale, and that is the amount you are taxed at the end of the year. Separately, you describe that you own another 0.5 shares of Facebook and 1 share of Google.
We hope we have been helpful!
Greetings!
